Understanding Bitcoin Liquidation Heatmaps
A practical guide to what liquidation heatmaps represent, how models produce them, how to read their visual language, and why estimates are not predictions.
What is a liquidation heatmap?
A liquidation heatmap is a visual model of price areas where leveraged positions may be vulnerable to forced closure. A leveraged position uses margin to control a larger market exposure. If the market moves far enough against that position, a trading venue may close it when its margin requirements are no longer satisfied.
The heatmap organizes estimated liquidation areas by price. Instead of presenting a long table, it uses horizontal bands and color intensity to show where a model places relatively greater or smaller concentrations. It is an estimate—not a ledger of confirmed positions or future liquidations.
How is a liquidation heatmap obtained?
A liquidation heatmap begins with the market and derivatives inputs available to its model, together with assumptions about leverage, margin, position direction, and aggregation. Those assumptions are used to estimate vulnerable price areas and group them into a visual distribution.
The exact result depends on the supplied inputs and the model’s rules. Two heatmaps can differ if their data sources, assumptions, intervals, or update times differ.
How to read the visual language
Price normally appears on the vertical axis while time runs across the horizontal axis. Colored horizontal bands represent estimated liquidation intensity at different prices. Brighter bands or longer profile bars indicate greater relative intensity within the displayed model.
The legend determines what each color means. When a chart assigns one color to estimated short liquidations above price and another to estimated long liquidations below it, that convention belongs to that chart and should be checked before interpretation. Without a monetary scale, relative intensity should not be converted into a dollar liquidation amount.
Why can liquidation heatmaps be useful?
Their main value is scenario planning. They make it easier to see whether estimated leveraged stress is concentrated close to the market or distributed across a wider price range.
- Risk mapping: estimated leveraged pressure becomes visible by price area.
- Asymmetry: the chart shows how modeled concentrations are distributed above and below the displayed price.
- Context: the output can be compared with other verified market information when those inputs are available.
- Event records: a timestamped heatmap can preserve what the model displayed during a specific market event.
Limitations and model risk
A liquidation heatmap is not proof that price must move toward a colored area. Estimated positioning can change, the input data may be incomplete or delayed, and the model’s assumptions may not match actual account-level leverage or margin conditions.
A highlighted zone therefore supports a conditional observation: if price reaches that area while the estimate remains relevant, the modeled positions may face greater pressure. It does not establish that the move will occur or determine the market’s next direction.
Look for the market, timeframe, data timestamp, source, model assumptions, aggregation method, legend, and whether the intensity scale is relative or monetary.
